Name: Draco Lucius Malfoy
Nicknames: Malfoy
Age: 41
Birthday: June 5, 1980
Astrological Sign: Gemini
Astrology: Ever heard the phrase "snake-tongued?" It must have been invented to describe a Slytherin Gemini. (This doesn't refer to the Parseltongue gift, either, although the few Slytherin wizards who exhibited it have had a disproportionate number of Geminis in their midst.) Slytherin Geminis have the dubious gift of being able to lay the blarney on thick, and be believed. This is due to both their imaginative mental agility and to their skill with words. Of course, not all Slytherin Geminis are liars - but it is probably advisable to get all sides of the story if you hear interesting gossip from one of these wizards. Slytherins born under the sign of Gemini are also naturally skilled at any magical work which involves sleight of hand or incantations. They are less determined and aggressive than the average Slytherin, though, save perhaps in a field that involves debate. You will find far more of them chatting in the common room or looking up arcane lore in the library than on the Quidditch field or in a dueling match, with the exception of Quidditch Seekers: the sharp eyesight and quick reflexes associated with Gemini are good traits for a Seeker to have.

Personal History: As the only child in a very well off, influential family, Draco was, naturally, very pampered throughout his young life. But with the love and attention lavished on him came expectations: he got the presents because he deserved them by right of his birth, and as he got older, by what he made of himself. Because he had things that other did not, he was better than them, and this belief characterized his school years almost as much as his attempts to follow in his father's footsteps.
Pampering did not come only in the form of gifts. Training for the post-war world and how his parents hoped it would turn out involved a great deal of etiquette, instruction in how to best present himself to the world as befitting his status, and laying the groundwork for the schooling that was to come. From a very early age, he was defined by what others thought of him and bred to be extremely social, for his worth as a Malfoy was the sum of the impressions that he made upon the world. School was a wonderful place for him to do so, and so Draco entered Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with high expectations for himself.
Unfortunately for Draco, not meeting expectations became a trend, no matter who set the expectations for him. He got worse grades than the Mudblood Granger, was beaten by the utterly revolting Potter at every turn -- except for grades, but what good was that? Draco could wave his report card at the world, and they would always, always like Potter better, despite his bloodline and horrendous upbringing. It simply wasn't fair.
He spent his first few years of school attempting to rectify the situation. The best way he knew how was the way his father had taught him that people of lesser blood deserved to be treated: to be trampled upon like the scum they were, not fit even to grace the soles of royalty like Draco. But that was not as easy as it should have been, in the face of the teacher's blatant favouritism. He took solace in Professor Snape's dislike of the other boy, and pride in the resulting excellence in his Potions skills. He believed very strongly that he would have gotten far better grades in his other classes had the teachers not constantly compared him to Potter -- and, by extension of Potter's fame, his friends -- and found him lacking, through no fault of his own.
Still, though this was a grievous insult to his pride, Draco was still able to reconcile the maltreatment as being someone else's fault, not his. That all changed in his sixth year -- or perhaps more accurately, at the end of his fifth, when his father was put in jail -- when it all suddenly became Draco's responsibility, the worth of his family that was in question, and not only in relation to Potter. Draco drew on his prejudices to keep him going under the weight of expectation, especially the belief that his target, despite being a wise enough teacher and a wizard that even the Dark Lord feared, was guilty of the worst crime Draco knew: consorting with those of lesser blood. There was the part about his family being in danger, as well, but Draco tried to dwell on that as little as he could. It would not do to be afraid, he could not give in to his fear -- although it was easier to admit that he was afraid for his parents' safety than to admit that he was afraid of what he had to do.
As fate would have it, it was when he finally gave in to the fear and weakness that he had managed to avoid for so long that he was discovered by none other than Harry Potter himself. He had been reduced to crying in a bathroom, to the only person that he could not hide from -- a ghost -- and finding that his deepest, darkest weakness had been exposed to the person he most despised only added insult to injury. As he always did when he was hurting, Draco lashed out, trying to make himself feel better simply by comparison to someone who was hurting worse. Not for the first time, this tactic failed, though it had never failed to the point of a brush with his own mortality. As his blood seeped from his body, Draco was struck more by how inappropriate it was for him to die like this: his pure, perfect blood mixing with muddy water, the metaphor of submerging in filth becoming rather distressingly real.
It came as a surprise to him to be alive when his senses returned. It was even more of a surprise to find that he did not want to kill Potter for it, at least not immediately. After all, he deserved it, really: he had given in to his weakness and displayed it in a place where Potter could happen across it, and that was his fault. This is not to say that he forgave Potter, however. The other boy had done far too much harm to Draco's pride to get off that easily, and no one, but no one, was allowed to hurt a Malfoy and get away with it. But Draco knew where his priorities lay, and it would be far easier to hurt Potter by strengthening the very person he fought against. He was fairly certain that it was exactly that Potter had been attempting to stop him from doing.
His world was further turned on its platinum-blond head when his final and most daring attempt to kill the Headmaster failed. All Dumbledore had to do was open his mouth and the black and white facade that Draco had so carefully built up to give him strength shattered: suddenly, the person he was trying to kill to save his parents was someone that could offer his parents safety, who claimed to understand his situation better than anyone else had ever tried to, and the person he'd always believed would elevate his family to greatness was the one threatening to kill them all. He hesitated too long in thinking about it, until he was no longer seeing the man in front of him as the monster that he'd created in his mind in order to be able to kill him, and was forced to rely on his teacher to save him from complete and total disaster.
Still, he left the tower that night believing that had circumstances been different, he would have been able to succeed. Which was stupid, really, since what good was it to only be able to meet expectations when the situation was perfectly tailored to his needs? It was he who needed to learn how to be more flexible, to be able to adapt to his environment. If he was too slow, his failures would catch up to him, and he was sure that the second time around, they would be fatal.
With his father still imprisoned and the weight of his mother's safety still resting on his shoulders, Draco endured his training with his aunt, learning to close his mind and hide his weaknesses more fully. He learned how to Apparate properly, after practising hard, and was extremely grateful for the newfound freedom that the talent gave him that even his broom could not. He even learned to kill: what it meant to be the person that destroyed a family in the exact way that he was afraid of his family being destroyed, and when it was kinder to kill than to put someone through their very worst fears.
It came as a great relief to have his father out of prison. At seventeen, Draco was not at all prepared for being his family's spine, especially when he himself was constantly changing and learning new things about himself and what he was capable of every single day. He was not relieved of his duties, exactly, but at least they were shared, and his misery could certainly use the company. His family was kept captive in their home throughout most of the war, and all of their efforts at attempting to regain favour with the Dark Lord went to waste.
